2014 Masters

I spent part of 11 PGA Tour seasons as a club technician building and repairing clubs for the best players in the world. During 8 of those seasons I was lucky enough to get to work the Masters.

The Masters provides some unique challenges to the equipment reps. From parking the trailers across the street, to limited access to practice areas and the locker room the week of the Masters requires patience and a good pair of shoes because of all the extra walking. The week’s club building usually consisted of building that latest and greatest model for the procession of past champions such as Doug Ford, Gay Brewer, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer that would make their way over to the trailer for a yearly visit. It was also filled with player requests for that unique hybrid or wedge that would fill an individual players need for that specific week. Emergencies would also rise once in a while.

In 2010 on Wednesday afternoon I had packed up the rig and had made my way out onto Washington Rd and was headed toward I-20 when my phone rang. It was Alvaro Quiros – the long hitting Spaniard’s driver face had cracked. Turning around a 53 ft truck and trailer and finding a place to park on Washington Rd during the week of the Masters in Augusta is no picnic. I headed to a local truck stop set the trailer back up and proceeded to make two new drivers that were delivered back to the course within an hour.

Whether enjoying the Masters on TV or in person this week-sit back and enjoy the magic that is certain to take place.
