PGA at Valhalla
In August 2000, I was headed to a convention in Lexington, KY which started with a reception on Sunday night August 20th. I was not in the golf business at this point in my life, BUT being the golf fan that I am I was aware that the PGA Championship was taking place on the east side of Louisville at Valhalla Golf Club. So I purchased a ticket to the final round and headed to Kentucky a day early.
As you may recall, this particular PGA Championship Sunday was an epic battle between Tiger Woods and Bob May. With a large crowd it was very difficult to get very close to see Tiger and Bob play shots during the final round. I remember watching the final hole from 200 yards down the fairway as they both made clutch putts to send the PGA into a 3-hole playoff.
Aware that the first hole of the 3-hole playoff was the 16th, I immediately headed back to the 16th green and got a second row seat right behind the green. As you are watching the TV telecast this week, no doubt you are going to see highlights of Tiger walking in his birdie putt while pointing at his golf ball. I was right there and it was a memorable moment to say the least. Tiger was at his peak and went on to win his third major in a row that day. He would win the Masters in 2001 completing the Tiger-Slam. At least I got to witness a piece of this golf history.
Good memories from Valhalla. Enjoy the PGA this week!
